Let the art lead

TL;DR

When the work on show is loud, the brand around it should be quiet. A note on type, grids and getting out of the way.

When we design around an artist's work, the brief is rarely more design. It is usually less, and in the right places.

Pick one typeface and mean it

A single typeface, used at a few confident sizes, gives the art a steady frame. Add a second only when the first cannot do a job.

Build a grid, then leave space

A strict grid is what makes empty space look deliberate. The art should always have somewhere to breathe.

Save the colour for the work

If the paintings carry the colour, the identity does not have to. One accent is plenty.
